What to consider when shopping around for a gas fireplace
Here are some factors to take into consideration when looking for a gas fireplace for your home:
- If you want or need a direct vent model: Direct vent fireplaces are designed to pull fresh outside air into a home while simultaneously getting rid of the combustion that they produce. If you are looking to improve your indoor air quality, this type of fireplace may be the way to go. Vent-free fireplaces, on the other hand, utilize your home’s indoor air to exhaust it as heat.
- What size room you are looking to heat: Different types of fireplaces have different heat outputs. If your gas fireplace is going in a small room you can get away with a model that has a lower BTU output. Larger rooms and spaces will need something with a higher BTU that produces more heat in order for them to feel warm.
- The aesthetic you are going for: Vented gas logs produce a realistic looking flame that looks similar to the flame you get from a wood-burning fireplace. Vent-free logs don’t look as realistic, but they are more efficient at producing heat compared to their vented counterpart.
- The dimensions of the space where your fireplace is going: Obviously you have to make sure the dimensions of your desired fireplace are going to work for the room you’re planning on installing it in. There is more to it than just that, however. You should also consider how large of a viewing area (we are talking about the visible portion of the firebox that you can see through the glass) you want. Fireplaces with a small viewing area are great for bedrooms or living areas that are on the smaller size. If you are installing a fireplace in a large living room or an open-concept space, consider a model with a large viewing area.
- What type of gas you are going to power your fireplace with: Here at K.B. Johnson we sell both propane and natural gas hearth products.
Why go with a gas fireplace in the first place?
There are many advantages to a gas fireplace.
Wood-burning fireplaces require you to gather or purchase firewood, actually start the fire and continue to add logs to keep this fire burning. All you need to do with a gas fireplace is flip a switch or press a power button on a remote and you are good to go! There is also no mess to clean up after you put your fire out. That all sounds pretty convenient to us.
Additionally, gas fireplaces are extremely efficient. In fact, they typically rate 90% or higher when it comes to efficiency.
